Health Surveillance

What is Health Surveillance?

When employees work in roles where they are exposed to noise, vibration, solvents, fumes, dust or other hazardous substances, you will be required by law to have a relevant health surveillance programme in place.

Health surveillance is a system of ongoing health checks that enables you to monitor the impact of exposure to these workplace hazards on your employees’ health over time. The objective is to detect ill health effects at an early stage so that you can take action to prevent exacerbation, which you, as an employer have responsibility for.

The legislation

  • Management of H&S at Work Regulations, 1999. Read more…
  • Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations, 1992. Read more…
  • Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations, 2002. Read more…
  • Specialist legislation relating to specific chemicals, substances or risks

Health surveillance may be required if employees are exposed to risks in their working environment, including, but not limited to working with:

  • High noise levels or vibration
  • Ionising radiation
  • Materials such as asbestos and lead
  • Substances such as biological agents, solvents, dust, and fumes

Expert Guidance

We start by undertaking a needs analysis of your employee’s job roles and risks. We then recommend the appropriate health checks you need for each employee in order to comply with relevant health and safety legislations.

We work in partnership with you to implement and maintain a planned ongoing health surveillance programme.

Our Health Surveillance Programmes

Suggestions for your programme may include the following health checks dependent on the outcome of the needs analysis:

• Audiology assessments

• Respiratory and dermatology investigations for COSHH

• Vibration, HAVS and musculoskeletal assessments

• Night worker screening

• Drug and alcohol screening including chain of custody requirements, if necessary

The data we gather during screening contributes to the detection and prevention of health hazards, and evaluation of control measures. It also identifies opportunities to provide additional training and education.

Health surveillance ensures your business complies fully with health and safety legislation. The possibility of having someone who is at risk on site, not only puts them at risk but could also lead to prosecution for non-compliance and workplace injury.

Safety Critical Medicals

Safety Critical Medicals

Under current health and safety legislation, employers have a duty of care to prevent the ill-health of their workers. This is particularly relevant to those carrying out safety-critical tasks. It is important that safety-critical workers are not suffering from medical conditions or undergoing any medical treatment which is likely to cause sudden loss of consciousness or incapacity, impairment of awareness, concentration, balance or coordination or significant limitation of mobility.
