Understanding Fit for Task Medicals for High-Risk Work Test Results

Clear, practical explanations of High Risk work testing and what the results mean for your workforce.

Fit for Task Medicals can take many forms including but not limited to:

  • Safety Critical
  • Working at Heights
  • Confined Space
  • Firefighter
  • Airside
  • Driver

These medicals may have differing recall requirements however, in the main, in this age related requiring assessments every three years aged under 54, two yearly from 55 to 64 and annually from 65

Rather than assessing risk from role, these medicals are undertaken to ensure the employee is fit to undertake the required activities and have no health concerns which would adversely affect this.

It is important to note, advice given is in relevance to work activities i.e. driving and does not reflect fitness for driving a personal vehicle which fall under group 1 standards and are the responsibility of the individual

Understanding your results

Result Commentary What This Means For You
Not Cleared – Review 1/12 Blood pressure does not meet standards

Referred to GP
The employee’s blood pressure is outside the requirements for Group 2 driving (the standard to which all individuals are assessed).

The employee has been provided with copies of their readings and a GP letter to enable further investigation and management.

A review appointment is recommended in one month to review this and enable fitness clearance where applicable. The employee will receive emails chasing their GP results where these have not been received and the employer will be copied in for their awareness.

Where an employee has a ‘not cleared’ status, they must not undertake safety critical duties pending an updated certificate confirming fitness.

This should not be considered an optional position and may require an individual to be redeployed to non-safety critical duties which do not require exertion or medical suspension pending resolution.

Where results are not received within 3 months, a full re-test will be required to establish fitness for safety critical working.

Not Cleared – Review 1/12 Vision does not meet standards

Referred to Optician
The employee’s vision is outside the requirements for Group 2 driving (the standard to which all individuals are assessed).

The employee has been provided with copies of their readings for their Optician to enable further investigation and management.

We will require a copy of their updated prescription and the outcome of the optician’s test in the prescription to pass fit. Without this, we will need to re-test in one month to confirm fitness and update certification.

Cleared with Restrictions Requires a trade test to ensure effective discrimination for working practices This outcome would indicate the employee has a colour vision deficiency. This may or may not create difficulties in undertaking their role. A trade test needs to be undertaken by the employer to ensure the employee can determine the difference between all required coloured objects in their role i.e. wiring.
Cleared with Restrictions A workplace risk assessment to ensure all audible warning signals can be heard is required This outcome would indicate the employee has a reduced level of hearing. It is advised an employer assessment of hearing for emergency alarms, moving vehicles etc is undertaken to ensure their safety in the workplace.
